The Knoop-Altenholz Connection

In a previous post made here, I made reference to Altenholz, Germany where a Knoop castle could be found.

This site shows a recent picture of the estate and contains more information. For those uninterested in clicking, here is an excerpt:

In 1322, the estate was first mentioned as the property of the nobility and was the home of the Ranztau family between 1400 and 1613. The house remained unchanged except for one renovation undertaken in 1707, and in 1723 it was acquired by the Earl of Baudissin. The financial difficulties of the Baudissins in the 19th century lead to the sale of the property in 1869. In 1903 the manufacturer Gerhard Friedrich Hirschfeld bought the estate and his descendants still own the property today. The priceless furnishings which graced the manor were lost during the occupation following the second world war.

Altenholz will definately be on my my “must visit” list next time I’m in Germany!

Knoop’s Popcorn Station

I came across this site tonight whilst searching for the ever elusive Google rank.

Owners Mike and Bev Knoop opened their doors for business in November of 1998. After many years of involvement with their two sons in school, athletics and church activities, they founded Knoop’s Popcorn Station. Having recently moved back to Louisville, they’ve found time to develop a new hobby designing creative gifts featuring their gourmet popcorn.

I was born in Montreal on April 12, 1963, as the first child of Robert and Annie Knoop. While growing up I lived in Montreal, Kingston, Deep River, Ibiza (Spain), New Amsterdam (Guyana), Ottawa, St. Catharines and Toronto.

I got a Bachelor of Science at Brock University in St. Catharines. After that I moved to Germany, since I’m German and Canadian and was curious what it would be like to live there. After working for about 7 years in various positions at the industrial oil sector I decided to use the experience in product developement (I was the head of a large lab in Germany) and marketing to start up my own business (www.wascut.de).

In 1992 I married Daniela von Koerber and had two sons, Tiemo (20 February 1994) and Lukas (19 October 1997). In 2004 I seperated from my wife, and moved to Klevenow,
where I’m renovating a large manor together with my father.

The Knoop Hardness Test

Push a diamond point into a hard surface for a specific time period and measure the indentation made. In short, that is the Knoop Hardness (KHN) test developed by F. Knoop (and others) in 1939 under the flag of the National Bureau of Standards.

A Knoop indenter was developed for this test - it is a specifically shaped diamond with very specific measurements (ratios). More details, including the formula can be found here.

Even more details, specific to steel hardness can be found here.
