The Meaning of the name Knoop

In all the books I have read and all the people I have spoken with regarding the name, no one knows it’s origins for certain. While some have theorized that the name is a derivative of Knop, one of the earliest records seem to originate from northern Germany, near Kiel. In one book passed to me from my uncle Robert Knoop, a picture of the Knoop Wasserburg or “water castle” located in Altenholz, Germany around the year 1300.

The Knoop name has been roughly translated or associated with “dweller at a hilltop or knoll”.

I would be interested in hearing from those who could shed some light on this and I’m sure that I’m not the only Knoop that has questioned his origins.

Free knoop.org email!

One of the main reasons I purchased this domain was to have one email address that would never require changing. Family has grown to enjoy this too since they can change ISPs, change jobs and move to different countries and still keep the same simple address.

That said, knoop.org is offering free email aliases to Knoops and this is how it works:

All mail sent to your knoop.org address is forwarded to any email address you like. You would simply change your from address to be your knoop.org address and email will arrive in the inbox that you currently use today!

For example: suppose your current email address is bob.knoop@xyz.com. knoop.org’s email server can be configured to take all mail sent to bob@knoop.org (assuming it’s available) and foward it to bob.knoop@xyz.com. Bob could then tell his family and friends that his new email address is bob@knoop.org even though he still uses xyz.com to send/receive his email. Think of it as a vanity email address.

Disclaimer: Since this is a free service offering, knoop.org reserves the right to cancel it at anytime. Worry not, this would only take place if you were abusing the service.

Still unclear? Send me an email or post a comment to this thread.

Knoop coat of arms

Knoop coat of arms

The picture closely resembles other variations of the coat of arms that has been described as:

Blue; A gold left diagonal band charged with three red hunting horns, tied and ringed silver, placed in the direction of the left diagonal. A naturally coloured dog (French Pointer) issuing from a blue tub, circled gold.

If anyone has variations of the above, or more information regarding the Knoop coat of arms, please do chime in!

And are French Pointers really grey?!? ;)
